Some people have asked about this whole Mystery Guest of the Month
thing we’re doing on Wing Side Up. Trust me I’ve asked myself as well since I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or just another one of my hair brained schemes.

The way it all came about was that I was having a hard time nailing down a guest for the “Inside the Helmet” segment of “Wailing with Wing Side Up”and it was getting down to a couple of days before my #1 cheerleader, ace webmaster, and all around good guy,( ok if she WAS a guy…not that she is, but I’m just saying, if she WAS a guy…she very probably could boot Biggie off of the #3 slot on the myspace page, cuz she’s SOOO cool like that), Annamarie Malfitana-Strawhand, (dontcha love when I try to say the whole thing on the show?), had to get the web update done.

She kept buggin’ me, as she always does, about the who’s, what’s, when’s, and where’s, of the episode coming up and I kept telling her I didn’t know. Now, anyone who knows me really well, knows that I am a procrastinating S.O.B. I’m rarely on time for anything or anywhere…unless it’s for a supermodified race and even then it’s been kinda close a couple of times tryin to get into the booth to announce. So I’m pretty sure she wasn’t surprised when I didn’t come up with anything except-”Only the Shadow Knows” when she warned me that the update wouldn’t get done if I didn’t have something to give her. That term…”Only the Shadow Knows” was something my mom always used on me whenever I would pester her about something that I felt was extremely important, but she felt was pretty low on the totem pole and on a need to know basis. Basically-it’s a brush off. In a real nice mom type of way she was saying, “Bob, I’m busy, leave me alone, go play with your big wheel or matchbox cars.” I never really knew were it came from until she finally told me when I was a teen that it was from the old time radio show. I found out even later that it was voiced by Orson Wells and after talking to my grandma, how popular and cool the show was.

Back to where we were going

So anyway…what all this is leading to is the fact that sometimes I think not knowing all of the story, makes for a bit of excitement. My line of thinking is that you need to get people to want to know more. It’s like those posts you see on the bitch boards about who’s gonna be where and with what supermodified. It creates talk, gets the mind going, and is generally fun to hypothosize about what the car count will be like. So when I didn’t know who our guest was going to be, I said well let’s run with it. Then the more I thought about it, I said to myself, “self, you could be onto a good gimmick,” so why not ya know?

Trouble is, there’s some good guys that I want on Wailing as guests and it’s always the last show of the month that we do it. I’m hoping that we can generate traffic to the website and get people talking about who it could be, but I’m worried that maybe we will lose people because I know folks tune in not to hear me but to hear the guests.

After mulling on this for a while, a regular listener helped me to see the light. We got to talking, and mostly because he really likes this driver so much that he sponsors him, and he said ‘what about a teaser or something?” BAM, I awoke from my marketing and pr slumber with those words as quickly as I do when I hear that grating voice from the oxy clean commercials.

Ok so hopefully this blog doesn’t make you as sick as Billy Mays does, but what I’m getting at is that this person…NOT Billy…helped me realize that I need to use this venue to tease you readers…all five of you.

So keep your eyes posted here for teasers on who the Mystery Guest of the Month is gonna be. The first person to guess gets a 2009 ISMA yearbook and a high hearty ho and a pat on the back!

First Clue….and they aren’t always gonna be this easy….He loves his moonshine when he’s not racing on the ISMA circuit.
